Change Your Life with NLP

I’m starting the New Year with a series of newsletters focused on the areas of the Wheel of Life that I discuss in my book ‘Change Your Life with NLP’. The areas are Career, Relationships, Family, Personal Development, Wealth, Health & Fitness.

This week I’m focusing on CAREER.
With all the doom and gloom of the media at the start of 2009, you may well be thinking that you’ll stay in your current job until further notice. I have a question for you though…. It’s Sunday evening and I’m wondering how you’re feeling about going to work tomorrow. If you’re feeling energised and motivated that’s great. And, if you have that sinking feeling that you’ve had for a while it may well be an indication that you’re firmly in the Grey Zone and that you need to consider a change. Of course, in the current climate it wouldn’t be sensible to leave your job unless you already have something else to move to. And, if you’re just been made redundant you have an amazing opportunity to do something different with your career.

If you know that you want a change but have no clue in which direction to move ask yourself the following question:
‘What’s most important to you about your job?’ Keep asking yourself and make a list. For example, you might come up with (1) Variety of work (2) World-wide travel (3) High salary (4) Flexibility (5) Being part of a team and so on…. These are your career VALUES which indicate to you what really motivates you in your work. If you’re feeling less than positive about going to work on Monday ask yourself how far your current job matches your VALUES. You may be surprised at the mis-match which is why you are feeling unhappy.

More people than ever are coming to me now for a BreakThrough session to help them work out what they do next. I always do this exercise with them. Once you have your list start asking yourself what kinds of jobs will fulfil your career values?

Now ask yourself what two things can I do each day to help me move towards my new job. For example, speak to headhunters, contact people in the kind of job you want to do and ask them how they got their jobs, join networking groups, join on-line networks and so on. If you do two things every day imagine how far forwards you’ll be in a month’s time – that’s 40 steps closer to your ideal job.

If you have a redundancy package, maybe now is the time to start your own business and be ready when the economy picks up. If you want to do that know in advance that it’s likely to mean a 7 day a week commitment for the first two years without time for much else in your life. And, the rewards are potentially very high.

Final top tip for career, is to ‘Act as If’ you already have what you want. Ask yourself, what would someone in my ideal job be wearing, how would they be behaving, what would they be saying and who would they be hanging out with. Then you do those things and notice how you begin to attract what you want towards you.
